Table of Contents

Poor market conditions are forcing Besse Forest Products to permanently close three hardwood veneer and plywood manufacturing facilities in Wisconsin, resulting in more than 130 layoffs.

Closing are Wisconsin Veneer & Plywood, Mattoon, Wi. (42 employees affected); Goodman Veneer & Lumber Co., Goodman, Wi. (48 employees affected); and Birchwood Manufacturing, Rice Lake, Wi. (46 employees affected).

According to a company statement, "due to an unprecedented industry downturn, it has recently become clear to the company that the revenues of the company will no longer support (these three) operations. After exploring restructuring alternatives, we have determined that (each location) will cease operations."

No employees will be transferred to continuing operations.

Besse was acquired by Hoffman Family of Companies in March.
