Roseburg Forest Products, Springfield, Or., has reached a settlement with the city of Weed, Ca., putting an end to a two-year legal battle concerning water rights.

A judge approved the deal, in which the city conceded both that it has no ownership interest in water from the Beaughan Springs and that Roseburg has the exclusive right to divert the water. Weed also agreed to discontinue all claims to the rights.

Roseburg senior VP and general counsel Stuart Gray said, “This litigation was never about monetary compensation. Our intent all along was simply to have the court uphold our clearly established ownership rights and eliminate challenges to such.”

The city signed a lease with Roseburg in 2016 to access water from the spring for the next 10 to 15 years. It is exploring alternative sources for when the lease expires.
