Lowe’s will close 51 “under-performing” locations in the U.S. and Canada over the next 12 weeks.
Twenty stores in the U.S. will be shuttered: Graysville, Al.; Aliso Viejo, Irvine, South San Francisco, and Central San Jose, Ca.; Orange, Ct.; Granite City and Gurnee, Il.; Portage, In.; New Orleans, La.; Quincy, Ma.; Burton and Flint, Mi.; Mankato, Mn.; Bridgeton and Florissant, Mo.; two in Manhattan (Upper West Side and Chelsea), N.Y.; Shippensburg, Pa.; and Irving, Tx.
Some were closed immediately; others will close gradually, whittling down their inventories presumably by Feb. 1, 2019.
In Canada, Lowe’s will shutter 27 stores and four support facilities.
“The store closures are a necessary step in our strategic reassessment as we focus on building a stronger business,” said Marvin Ellison, who was named president and CEO in July. Shortly thereafter, he announced Lowe’s would close its Orchard Supply Hardware division.
